Vic: Firefighters contain blaze at briquette plant

MELBOURNE, Dec 27 AAP - Firefighters have contained a large blaze at a briquette manufacturing
factory in Victoria's east.

The fire started in one of four buildings at Energy Bricks in Commercial Road, Morwell,
around 7pm (AEDT) last night, Country Fire Authority spokesman John Tindall said.

The plant manufactured briquettes for power generation and the blaze extensively damaged
the top four floors of an eight-storey building and spread to a second building, Mr Tindall
said.

At the height of the fire there were fears the blaze would spread to the other buildings,
he said.

However, fire crews had contained the blaze to the two buildings by 11pm and were working
through the night to extinguish it, Mr Tindall said.

Fire crews faced a tough battle in extinguishing the blaze, he said.

"They are now confident that they have the fire contained to both building A and B
and will now commence the very long and arduous task of putting the fire out," he said.

"This is expected to take somewhere between 10 to 12 hours."
