The National Party intends to keep its grip on the deputy speaker's job in federalparliament, warning of a possible backlash if it loses the coveted role.

The traditional process which determines which party takes the role has come undoneas incumbent NEIL ANDREW, former ministers DAVID JULL and ALEX SOMLYAY, and VictorianLiberal DAVID HAWKER jostle for the speaker's job.
