Avalanche buries army post in Pakistan, killing 7 soldiers

An avalanche crashed into a northwestern Pakistan military post Tuesday, killing seven soldiers and injuring six others, officials said.

The incident occurred in the mountainous Darosh region about 350 kilometers (217 miles) northeast of Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier province, said local police officer Bahadur Khan.

The snow slid from a nearby hillside very quickly, giving the soldiers no chance to run, Khan said.

He said the six injured soldiers had also been buried, but rescuers were able to dig them out. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

Winter has brought heavy snowfall to much of northwestern Pakistan in recent weeks.
