FED:Think affordable housing, IMF says

The International Monetary Fund is urging governments to consider initiatives to promote
affordable housing .. or provide good-quality rental accommodation as an alternative.

In analysis on housing finance and financial stability .. the Washington-based institution
says a more level tax treatment across home owners and renters should also be considered.

It says the role of government in the housing market should be carefully reviewed as
it may unintentionally contribute to financial instability.

It believes a disproportionate focus on home ownership might exacerbate house price
swings .. while governments should undertake more targeted measures to achieve social
objectives .. such as affordable housing for low-income households.
